James Clyburn\u2019s district, with thousands of primary absentee ballots already in voters\u2019 hands; Alabama is racing to reinstate congressional maps a federal court already struck down once under the Voting Rights Act; and in Virginia, the Supreme Court denied the state\u2019s request to reconsider its ruling, killing a voter-approved redistricting plan on a technicality. This is a synchronized, multi-state blitz to gerrymander Democrats and Black voters out of representation before November. John Stevens \u2014 a state lawmaker who lived in Memphis for three years \u2014 looked a Black colleague in the eye and claimed he \u201cdidn\u2019t know\u201d that Memphis is predominantly African American- it must be because, like the courts, he is “color-blind”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n John Oliver broke it down on Last Week Tonight<\/a> with footage that has to be seen to be believed: Stevens played dumb to avoid admitting the maps were racially motivated, because the law still technically prohibits intentional racial discrimination in redistricting.
