53% of Independents disapprove of Trump’s immigration tactics, with support continuing to fall.
The Good News: only 37% of Americans approve of Trump’s immigration tactics according to a March study of 30,000 Americas across all 50 states by Matthew Baum with the Harvard Kennedy School. The Bad News: 78% of Republicans still approve, yielding a 67 point gap between Republicans and Democrats for an on-going, stark difference in opinion. But the results are clear, “states with the most personal connection to immigrants have the least support for aggressive tactics,” proving that when we are connected to immigrants, we are more compassionate. This extraordinary read was written mid-pandemic but details a story of political upheaval and the transition of one woman, Klein’s seeming real-life doppelgänger, from feminist icon to right-wing darling alongside Steve Bannon. Klein was prescient in understanding the political transition overtaking our country far before Trump’s re-election. Read her excellent book and listen to Ezra Klein’s recent podcast interview with her just recently about how a descent into the mirror world now explains our everyday.
