Why CA-13 & OR-5 to Flip the House

by

One of the core adages of politics is ‘all politics are local.’

But when we started Flip the States, one of our core beliefs was that we have to start caring about what happens beyond our own single district, county or state because what happens in other states can impact us too. That’s why today we are talking CA and OR.

In 2022, Democrats lost the majority in the House by painfully close margins, largely because of lost seats in blue states – not battlegrounds, not red states, but rather states we typically think of as easily blue through and through. That generalization is exactly why we lost those seats and the House majority. Today, we are highlighting 2 seats in true blue states that we must win if we want Democrats to take back the House. If you care about flipping the House, donate to these two flippable seats or our list of the TOP 6 Impact Races to Flip the House. As always, your donation goes directly to the campaigns.

FLIP CA-13:

Democrat Adam Gray, raised $2.6M in 2024 vs.
Republican Incumbent Josh Durate, raised $3.1M in 2024

Barbara Lee was first elected to represent CA-13 in 1998, the beginning of an incredible 20+ year career where Lee notably chaired the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Black Caucus, was a founding member of the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus and was the only member of Congress to vote against authorizing war following 9/11. In 2024, when CA Sen Dianne Feinstein indicated she wouldn’t run for re-election, Lee left her seat and threw her name into anintense Democratic Senate primary, opening up CA-13 for the first time in more than 20 years. Lee established an incredible record and legacy, but Democrats failed to defend her seat, losing it by a devastating 564 votes in a massive upset in 2022. This year, Democrat Adam Grey looks to retake Lee’s seat, one every Democrat should be fighting to regain, but will need additional resources to make up a fundraising gap and boost name recognition.

FLIP OR-5:

Democrat Janelle Bynum, raised $2.4M in 2024 vs
Republican Incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer, raised $4M in 2024

Very few Democrats think of Oregon as a place we need to defend, but that is the reality when it comes to winning back OR-5. This seat flipped to Republican in 2022 by only 2pts after a 10+ year trend of being held by Dems. Now, in 2024, Democrat State Rep Janelle Bynum, who is running on her record of delivering for her district’s voters in the OR State House, is looking to beat Republican incumbent Lori Chavez-DeRemer, an opponent Bynum has beaten twice when this matchup faced each other in state level races. But Bynum is more than $1 Million behind in the money game. Bynum is ready to take back this seat, but she needs our help to make it happen. The impact of late fundraising (fundraising after Labor Day) is that a campaign still has time to place more digital and TV ad buys when getting the final word matters most.
