“Women are not some piece of collectively owned community property the disposition of which is decided by majority vote,” wrote GA Judge Robert C.J. McBurney, a Republican appointee, in his opinion striking down GA’s 6-week abortion ban this week. Judge McBurney’s ruling is a reminder that Americans in 10 states will also be casting votes in Nov on state ballot measures to increase access to abortion, including in swing state AZ. If you’re looking for opportunities to ensure your dollars make a big impact for Democrats, state races in Arizona on our Top 10 Impact Races where Abortion is on the Ballot is a great place to start.
Today, we’re doing a deep dive on AZ, up-balloting and why your dollars in AZ state races can help Hold the Senate, Flip the House, support abortion rights and push Harris over the top to win the Presidency all at once.
Support Abortion Rights, Flip the AZ State House & Senate
The AZ State House and State Senate each have a Republican majority by one seat. Earlier this year, AZ citizens were threaten with a 1864 law that would have enacted a near total abortion ban and also included mandatory prison sentences for doctors performing abortions. Only after intense pressure did just three Republicans join Democrats to repeal this state law. The AZ Republican majority was more than willing to embrace this extreme law, which is why we created the Top 10 Impact Races where Abortion is on the Ballot. This list includes multiple AZ State House and State Senate races where Democrats can win to flip these chambers and ensure women are protected.
There’s often talk about down-ballot impact, where high profile candidates at the top of the ticket could help other Dems win down ballot. This year in AZ, we’re hopefully for the opposite- up-balloting. Based on trends in other states where voters overwhelming have supported expanding abortion rights (even in red states like KS and OH), we expect voters will also turn out to support AZ’s ballot measure to expand abortion rights. We want to encourage those same voters to vote for the Democratic candidates up the ballot who will support these same rights. Your dollars go the farthest when you support Dems in local state legislative races, such as in AZ State House 17 and 28 from our Top 10 list, where a few hundred or thousand votes can make the difference to flip the State Legislature AND support up-ballot voting for Dems in US House and Senate races too.
Want to support AZ & Flip the US House?
If you’re in on supporting up-balloting in this critical swing state, but also want to stay focused on the Flipping the House, then check out AZ-1 and AZ-6. Both races are ready to flip. Donating to Democrats Amish Shah and Kirsten Engel will help Democrats take back the majority in the US House and help turn out Dems to vote to expand access to abortion. Turning out more Democratic voters will also help Democrat Ruben Gallego who is running for US Senate and the Harris-Walz campaign in this critical swing state.
This election may just turn on abortion rights. Judge McBurney added in his GA opinion, “It is generally men who promote and defend laws like the LIFE Act, the effect of which is to require only women — and, given the socio-economic and demographic evidence presented at trial, primarily poor women, which means in Georgia primarily black and brown women — to engage in compulsory labor, i.e., the carrying of a pregnancy to term at the Government’s behest.” The Harris campaign has reminded us that this election is about Freedom, freedom for all women, all families, in every state. Whether you live in AZ or not, supporting state level races in AZ supports women’s freedom AND could drive the turn out needed to ensure AZ goes for Dems to help Win the Presidency, Hold the Senate and Flip the House.
