Yes really it’s Sat and thanks to the North Carolina Governor’s race, we have to talk porn sites.
In case you didn’t see it this week, the quick version here is a CNN investigation revealed extremely offensive comments made by the Republican candidate for Governor Mark Robinson on a porn site going back a decade ago. Prior to this, Robinson already had a well documented slew of hateful and vile comments including him writing in a 2019 FB post that abortion in America was about “killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.” Among other things he wrote on the porn message board, Robinson referred to himself as a “black Nazi” and defended slavery. You can google Robinson to see the rest, but trust us in saying this is the only comment we are quoting for a reason. Yes it’s salacious, but why care if you aren’t in North Carolina?
Here are the THREE reasons every Democrat should care about North Carolina:
1.North Carolina is back on the map as a Presidential Battleground State. When VP Harris took the nomination, there were rumbles that NC could be in play. This state hasn’t gone blue since 2008 though so it was definitely more wishful thinking. But recent polling has shown Harris in the margin of error (even up +1 in one poll) and that was before this week’s Robinson bombshell. These revelations should solidify his Gov race is over. BUT, top tier candidates can also wreck havoc on an entire ballot of Republican candidates, including Trump. That’s the belief here, with the Robinson woes giving Trump soft voters a reason to stay home and perhaps not vote at all…. especially when, so far, Republicans and Trump are largely ignoring or standing behind their man in Robinson.
2. Republicans are scared so they are trying to limit UNC voting. Last year, the NC state legislature put strict voter ID laws into place. Luckily, the Dem majority state election board approved for college students at UNC to use their mobile ID cards as voter ID. But just last week, the RNC and state GOP party sued to challenge this ruling. They know this state is close, so they turned to their typical voter suppression tactics, hoping to limit turn out by young people. Luckily, a judge denied the lawsuit. North Carolina isn’t fool’s gold this year. This state is worth chasing for Harris, which will also force Trump’s campaign to spend money and time here to defend what was once considered a lock for him. Remember, every dollar Trump spends here is a dollar he isn’t spending in another swing state, say PA for example. Not to mention, sometimes it just feels good to win on some seriously red Republican turf. North Carolina is ripe to offer a massive upset; we need to help it along. But as we told you just days ago, Kamala doesn’t need your dollars. It’s down ballot Dems that do. Keep going to see where dollars can make a difference in NC – it likely isn’t where you think.
3. An elected Dem switched parties to create a Republican NC State Legislature Supermajority & cast the decisive vote to limit reproductive rights. Let’s Break this Supermajority. NC Republicans currently have a one seat supermajority in the State House and State Senate. This supermajority was achieved thanks to a single State Rep who was elected as a Democrat, but switched parties to Republican after being elected in a heavy Dem district. Her vote delivered the Republican supermajority last year, allowing Republicans to overrule the NC Democratic Gov and put extreme policies restricting abortion rights (now illegal after 12wks thanks to this state rep) and more into law. If that doesn’t rile you up, I don’t know what will – and no, there was literally no recall option for voters. So, voting her out and breaking the supermajority in 2024 is the option. Not to mention the need to stop the voter suppression tactics of the state GOP, like those mentioned above, if Dems want NC to continue to be in play for future Senate and Presidential cycles. Flipping just one state seat will end the Republican Supermajority.
